CT TROLLEY MUSEUM Autumn Pumpkin Patch Event

CT TROLLEY MUSEUM
Autumn Pumpkin Patch Event

WHEN?   Friday, October 22nd, 2010 at 10 AM.  Please arrive between 9:45 and 10 AM.

WHERE?  58 North Road, East Windsor, CT  (plenty of free parking available at the site)

WHO?  All ages welcome.

COST?  Adults are $9 each, children 3 through 17 are $5 each, and children two and under are free.

ARRIVAL:  We will meet for a check-in, on the front lawn just outside the Visitor's Center.  Please be sure to meet me there and have your name marked as present.

DESCRIPTION OF EVENT:  The Annual Trolley Museum Pumpkin Patch event is a special event that they arrange for visitors.  For your admission fee, you get UNLIMITED trolley rides for the day of our visit, and one stop at the Pumpkin Patch to select a pumpkin that your child(ren) may want to decorate back at the Visitor’s Center building.   On the front lawn of the Center, weather permitting, there will be a variety of lawn games set up for our use, such as bean bag toss, hula  hoops and a bubble table to name some of the games.  There may also be free face painting and tattoos for the kids if the staff is available for us on that day; they’re volunteers, so no promises on that portion of the offerings.
The Conductors of the trolleys are very friendly and happy to talk about the history of trolleys in general, how they are run, and the history of the particular car you are riding at the time.  They have multiple cars running on any given day, so it’s fun to take a turn riding all of them and learning about the history and function of them.  The ride is 3 miles long, and in October, it’s gorgeous with the foliage, as well.
In addition, the Visitor’s Center is a great place to visit and the changing exhibits there are quite fun to explore, too.
There are picnic tables in front of the Dining Trolley Car, outdoors, if you’d like to bring a picnic lunch.
There is also a cute little Gift Shop, as well.

ATTENDANCE:  There is no reasonable limit to the number of people that can register for this trip, so feel free to pass the information along to a homeschool friend who might be interested, or to your local group.

WEBSITE:  To get an idea of what this wonderful place has to offer, check the site out http://ct-trolley.org/ctm/

TRIP COORDINATOR:  Diane Connors

TO REGISTER:  Please print out the field trip form at this webpage http://ct-cheer.com/FIELDTRIPFORM.htm and fill it out.  Mail it to Diane as the instructions are listed on the form.  You will be contacted via email to confirm your payment and space at the event.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE:  Your payment and registration form must be postmarked no later than October 8 th so that Diane can report a headcount to the museum and they can have the appropriate number of volunteers prepared to greet us.  Once that headcount is given, by 10/8, there are no refunds; the money  is committed to the museum.

WEATHER ?  This is a rain or shine event.  There is a covered area to wait for trolley rides outside, and the exhibits are indoors.  Check your email before leaving for the trip in case of unlikely changes!!

FIELD TRIP – The Vintage Radio & Communications Museum

Date?  Friday, September 24th, 2010
Why ?  To tour an impressive number of communications equipment from the birth of the telegraph to modern day equipment, plus an optional radio-making class.
Where?  115 Pierson Lane, Windsor, CT
Size?  I've been told that they can handle a large group, and I wasn't given a maximum number.  So, we should have room for everyone.  They will rotate groups as needed.
Time?  The tour starts promptly at 10 AM.  Plan to arrive by 9:45 to gather, take any trips to the bathroom,  store any belongings, and be ready for the fun !  The tour is about 1 hour or so and it’s very, very good – we’ve been before. Then, the radio making takes up the rest of the time.  The children actually make and take a crystal radio home.
We’ll be done no later than noon.
Ages?  Families are welcome for the tour and ages 7 and up are appropriate for the crystal radio making portion of the program.  The younger ones (around 7 or so) may require parental guidance with radio  making.  This is not a drop-off event; an adult must be present and responsible for each child.
Cost?  There are two prices for this trip. Parent-teachers are free with their child(ren) for the tour or to help with the radio class if their child needs it.
To take the crystal radio making class, the fee is $15 per child.
To take the tour, ALL children pay $4.
Children aged 7 and up may do BOTH the tour and radio class for $19 per child.
Website:  http://www.vrcmct.org/  The site will give you a good overview of what the place is like.
Weather?  This is an indoor event, rain or shine.
Lunch?  You are welcome to bring your lunch and eat at the facility, if you’d like to.
Trip coordinator:  Diane Connors
To register:  Print out & fill out this form (LINK HERE  http://ct-cheer.com/FIELDTRIPFORM.htm) and mail it to me, with your payment made out to: Diane Connors, P.O. Box 629, Columbia, CT 06237
Registration Deadline:  Payments must be postmarked by September 10th so I can cash all of the checks a few days later and give the museum leader a final headcount.  The facilitator is going out of his way for our homeschool families, as he ordinarily does not do these groups on a Friday morning. He’s actually taking a day off of work from his regular job to plan properly for our group; he needs final numbers, early.  Thank you for your consideration to this matter.  We’ll do the museum folks proud !

Writers' Workshop

Passing this along from Patty Schmid.......

Hi!  I wanted to let you know about this Writers’ Workshop. Mrs. Kathleen Fitzgerald is the teacher.  She taught in Tolland for many years and my daughter Ashely was in her class for 1st and 2nd grade.  She is wonderful.  She is no longer teaching in the public school system and has a heart to help homeschooling moms and kids.  This past spring she did a writers’ workshop and we are hoping to expand it to more children this fall. If you are interested in these classes please email me.  Below is the schedule and a letter to parents from Mrs. Fitzgerald.

Thank you,
Patty Schmid

Introductory meeting on Thursday September 9th

 Dear Parents:
“Are you looking for a way improve or inspire your child in writing?”
I may have the key to helping your child succeed in writing! Starting with the first squiggles that then become letters of the alphabet-writing begins!  Parents cheer on and celebrate each baby step to becoming a fluent writer.  Writing becomes important in assessment to demonstrate understanding, put thoughts together and answer questions in the written form.
Writing throughout his/her education will be one piece of the puzzle that helps decide if a child is competent or not for the next grade. Writing measures growth!
Whether it’s a college application, a job application, a business or friendly letter, writing skills are necessary to promote, persuade, and/or organize our ideas and qualifications.  Writing is a life skill that will carry you forward, demonstrate academic strength and will be a reflection on a student’s education.
There is a very strong connection between reading and writing! Reading makes us better writers and writing makes us better readers.
I would love the opportunity to set up class times for small group instruction in the many areas of writing. I have taught for 16 years in grades K-6th and have had extensive training in teaching students to write.  I group children by grade level and like to meet once per week in the Church of the Living God classroom.  I have completed a mini workshop from April –May to give some parents in your community a sample of the types of classes and skills I could offer.  Now is the best time to set up a schedule before art, gymnastics, piano, and other activities are chosen for the fall. Please don't hesitate to email me if you have any questions.
