Coach Biography:

God has drawn me to Him for the last 20 years and has called me to minister through sports.  I have seen God teach me many lessons of faith when playing sports.  Athletic competition and practice provided me with a proving ground for applying God’s word.   As I interacted with teammates, opponents and coaches, and pursued excellence on the field, I learned to give my best for the Lord and practice my faith.  My hope is that when young athletes see their faith in action, they can translate this trust in God toward much more important areas of life.  God blessed me with a High School football career that lead to being named All-Jersey Shore and recruited by Division 1 programs.  Now, God has really blessed me with the chance to share my experience through coaching.  Also, I have served as bible study leader and Senior Deacon at the Evangelical Free Church in Windsor Locks (who is supporting this ministry).  I am truly blessed with a wonderful wife and three great children.

Manchester Community College is offering 3 classes this fall

Passing this along.....

Here is the list of the classes they are offering for homeschoolers:

Mixed Media Art Studio (Grades 5-8 or Ages 11-14)
Dive into Art! Throughout the course of this ten week class in a studio art setting, students will
explore different types of artistic medium. Our focus will be on watercolor and acrylic painting.
Drawing skills and techniques will also be emphasized and practiced as a good drawing is the
basis of a good painting. Students will practice color theory and color mixing, painting techniques
and composition. Several watercolor and acrylic painting projects will be completed throughout
the course! No class on 10/13/14
 CRN 31724 | Fee: $220
 8 Mondays | 9/15-11/10
 9 AM-12 PM | Location: AST D110
 Instructor: Cate Christen Waung

Masters of the Skies (Grades 5-8 or Ages 11-14)
What must terrestrial animals sacrifice in order to achieve flight? How are their bodies modified
in order to realize this freedom from gravity? Can you separate the fraudulent from the true
masters of flight? Caution: This may not be as easy as one thinks! Students will be expected to
take part in excursions to four different habitats on the MCC campus. They will observe the
differences in behavior of birds and insects on the ground and in the air. In the classroom,
comparative studies will be made of insect, bird and bat skeletal, muscular, circulatory, and
respiratory systems in order to gain a clear understanding of their physical adaptations for flight.
Using all of this information, students will extrapolate what physical modifications would be
necessary for their own bodies to take to the skies! No classes on 10/13/14.
 CRN 31711 | Fee: $220
 8 Mondays | 9/15-11/10
 9 AM-12 PM | Location: SSC L-142
 Instructor: Winthrop Ford

Earth Science (Grades 5-8 or Ages 11-14)
Students will observe how erosion by weather, water and detrition
causes the formation of soils. They will test the composition of
different types of soils and learn how they are classified. Tectonics
(diastrophism) and its causes, as well as, volcanology will be the
subjects of hands-on investigation. Armed with this knowledge and an
understanding of soil forensics, the class will be able to unearth secret
plans for the destruction of MCC by the diabolical Dr. I.G. Norance.
Somewhere on campus these plans for total annihilation lie buried.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to explore earth science in a
college environment through creativity and hands-on experiments.
This class will involve lab experiments and use of microscopes
and slides.

DC vacation available

Passing this along from Donna Meier, If you are interested, please contact her at 860-794-9851 or dcm111@cox.net

Close to a year ago, I had scheduled a family vacation in a 2 bedroom condo (with a balcony) at Wyndham National Harbor in National Harbor (Oxon Hill), Maryland for Sunday, August 17 through Saturday, August 23.  It is not a good time for me to travel right now, due to a health crisis that my Mom is going through.  This resort is really hard to get reservations for in the summer (which is why I made mine so long ago), so, before I cancel, I thought I would see if there is anyone who would like to take their family for a great DC adventure.  National Harbor is right on the Potomac River, with Alexandria right across the river.   DC sights can be reached by car or public transportation.  (Car is easier.)  The resort has an indoor pool and an outdoor pool, hot tubs, free pool table and fussball, and scheduled activities..  National Harbor has lots of cute shops and restaurants, including the only Peeps store in the world!     I am not trying to make money on this.  My cost is $870 for 6 nights.  That comes out to $145 per night.  There is no tax on top of that.  For that, you get 2 bedrooms (one with a king size bed, one with two full size beds), 2 bathrooms, a living room with a pull out queen size or full size sofa bed, a full kitchen with stove, oven, fridge, pots and pans, plates, silverware, table, etc ,so you can save money by eating at home.  The resort received 3.8 stars out of 4 on TripAdvisor.

Here is the resort webpage:

Here is the floor plan of the condo:

If you are interested, please contact me at 860-794-9851 or dcm111@cox.net.

Thanks!

Westfield Academy Debate Camp and class info

Passing this along from Holly Klein.....

There is still one week left of debate camp in West Hartford, CT.  I've posted this a few times over the past month, but if you have any questions, feel free to contact me or Ann Henderson directly.  I still can not say enough great things about this camp & the year-long classes.  Two students from Mrs. Henderson's middle school class were the winners of the Connecticut Speech & Debate state-wide competition.  The competition included both public schools & private schools from across all Connecticut.
- Holly Klein

Westfield Academy has wrapped up its first week of summer debate and Model United Nations camp. It was a great week, with our biggest group of campers yet!  We have had amazingly inspiring and informative speakers, including an Appellate Court judge, an Executive Director of an NGO and a State Representative.   We also had Dr. Ndibe, a noted novelist, Nigerian political commentator and professor at Brown University who has been labeled "an enemy of the Nigerian State" for his courageous refusal to stop publishing articles critical of the Nigerian government.  Dr. Ndibe has garnered recent acclaim for his article, “Nigeria: why are we sleeping easy when terrorists have kidnapped our children?,” which was carried by many major media outlets and proved crucial in bringing the Boko Haram abductions to international attention. He has since established himself as one of the leading journalistic authorities on both Boko Haram and the corrupt ineptitude of the Nigerian Government’s response. These speakers have left our students with lots of information to discuss and debate. The debaters and Model UN students have been impressive to see in action!

Our second week of camp is underway but there are still a few spots left for our third and final week of debate camp which is held in West Hartford.  It begins June 23rd and consists of Introduction to Parliamentary Debating and Advanced Parliamentary Debating.  Both the second and third weeks are appropriate for ages 8 to 18.  We break into small groups based on age and ability.

We have amazing collegiate debaters who work with the kids in addition to highly qualified and very successful debate coaches.  Our staff to camper ratio is probably the best in the state.  Campers receive individualized instruction.  We are a fully licensed camp.

If you are interested in enrolling your child for our year-long program in the fall, summer debate camp is the perfect opportunity to get them going on debate so that they can be ready to jump into the ongoing classes in September.

For further details, please visit our website at:  www.westfieldacademy.net.

Hope to see you at Debate Camp!

Field Day is set for tomorrow, Wednesday May 28 from 3 - 4:30 at the Scout Hall in East Windsor, CT.

Passing this along from Jen Fahey jen@faheyfam.com........

The Field Day is set for tomorrow, Wednesday May 28 from 3 - 4:30 at the Scout Hall in East Windsor, CT.

I changed things slightly to accommodate the weather. It will not be as warm as I hoped it would be.

Listed below are the events. The only thing I ask you to bring is something that can time your kids, like a stopwatch. Most smartphones have one, or if you still own a watch with a second hand, that works too.

I have learned that these days never go exactly as planned. So if we set the goal of having fun and giving our kids some unique ways to be together and have fun, then that is is good thing.

I do ask you that you reply to let me know if you ARE coming. That way, I can make sure I have enough supplies. And one more thing, if you have ideas for great field day activities, please feel free to bring along what is needed and we will add them to the events of the day.

Thanks! Hope you had a pleasant weekend. And you are more than welcome to pass this info along to anyone you think may be interested.

The final meeting of the Early Teens Homeschool Book Club for this school year will be held on Friday, June 6, from 1-3pm at the Mary Cheney Library in Manchester (there’s a multi-use room downstairs from the Children’s section). New members are welcome! We will be discussing The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman. Students will participate in discussion and other book-related activities, and are welcome to bring a snack to share. Participation in the Book Club is free, but RSVPs to shelleywurst@gmail.com for each meeting are appreciated so we can plan our room set-up and activities.
We will also be discussing the format and schedule for the 2014-15 year. If there are teens that are interested in attending in the fall, but can't make it to our June 6 meeting, please have them email me at shelleywurst@gmail.com with the best Friday of the month (1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th) for them to meet, and their preference of genre to read, and I will share that information with the teens in the group to help them make planning decisions.

There is also a companion book club for siblings ages 8-11 yrs old. Information on the companion group (including the book they will be discussing at this meeting) can be obtained from Laurel at blueskies379@gmail.com.
Looking forward to another fun afternoon and lively discussion with fellow bookworms!
