Homeschool Orchestra for 2011 TEACH Conference

Passing this along from T.E.A.C.H.............
 Dear Homeschooling Families,

The T.E.A.C.H. Board has asked Dr. John Finney to consider forming a chamber orchestra for the purpose of providing a prelude for the TEACH high school graduation ceremony on Friday evening June 10th.

John is Director of Worship at Grace Church in West Hartford. He and his wife homeschool their three daughters and provide music instruction to area homeschoolers.

He is planning to perform the first movement of Mozart's Symphony No. 29 and an arrangement of a hymn tune. Below is a complete description of the ensemble and the requirements for joining and participating in it. It will be open to instrumentalists from homeschooling families who successfully pass the audition requirements. We believe that this ensemble can provide a meaningful educational experience for the musician(s) in your family while also enhancing the graduation ceremony with beautiful music. This performance could also lead to the formation of a more permanent homeschool orchestra, depending on interest.

Sincerely,
The T.E.A.C.H. Board, on behalf of Dr. Finney

Homeschooler's Maple Sugaring Days

Passing this along from Susan Case, contact her if you are interested in attending one of the classes

Sweet Wind Farm in East Hartland CT is offering
Homeschooler's Maple Sugaring Days:
Friday March 18 at 10:00 a.m.
Monday March 21 at 11:00 a.m.
Wednesday March 23 at 1:00 p.m.

As I am a homeschooler myself, I can appreciate the idea of finding good, fun, and interesting things to do and learn about as a homeschooling family. This year I am going to be offering a few selected dates for homeschoolers to sign up and register to come to a maple sugaring class and tour. The class will include a storytime, narrated slide show and hands-on class, taste samples, a tour of the sugarhouse and tapped trees. A bit of history, science, and math all included! Rather than having individuals try to organize their own group, you can simply sign up with me (Susan Case) to come on one of these dates! This makes it easier for some to not have to be involved with a group and trying to organize a date that works for everyone at the same time.

In order to pre-register you must:

1. send in your name with contact info( a phone number and email, very important!!)
2. date/time of choice, (choose one of the above dates and times only please)
3. number of people coming total which includes parents and younger siblings, and ages and amount of students
4. a check written out to Sweet Wind Farm for $5.00 for each student ages 5 and up. Send your registration to our address at: 339 South  Road, East Hartland, CT 06027.
There is a 10 student minimum to run a class, so PLEASE tell your other homeschooling friends to join you! In the event there are not enough people registered to come on a given date, you will be informed and can choose to select a different date if you wish. Class capacity is 30 people, so it will be filled on a first-come first-served basis. Any cancellation on your part will not be refunded, but transferring the registration to another family, or changing to a different date if available, will be allowed. Please come dressed and prepared for the weather for the outdoor portion of the tour. Classes are not canceled due to rain.
NOTE**
If your organized homeschooling group would like to come together, please just sign up individually at the same time. You can even consider signing up as a group at one of your meetings, just send in all the necessary information I need and payment in one envelope. If your group desires to have a different date/time, as long as you commit to 10 paid students you can select a different date by contacting Susan by phone or email (860) 653-2038 or sweetwindfarm@sbcglobal.net

maximum cost would be $20 to register the kids)

Events of the day:
8:30-9:30 a.m. set up tables in the hall
(I’ll need volunteers to help with this)
9:30-10:00 a.m.  --  arrive and set up displays
10:00a.m.-1:00 p.m.  --  Grab your passports and visit as
many countries as you can!  Fair is open to public viewing.
12:45 p.m.  --  drawing for prizes  *details below*
1:00 p.m.  -- take down displays, clean up the hall
***please plan to help us tidy up the church hall
I am sorry to say this year I will not be bringing in pizza for lunch.  We have had to find a new facility to house our fair and the rent was such that I decided to forego pizza in order to keep down the cost to participate.
I will provide beverages, like water and juice, for sale at my cost.   Students and their families will need to bring a picnic lunch to amend all the international dishes that are served at the displays.
Participating Students:
Choose a country and over the course of the next few months do research and create a display to present your findings.  The displays can include, but are not limited to:  maps, pictures, written research, currency and postage, hands on games, a prepared food dish, items originating from your country, costumes, and more.  You will also need something representing your country with which to “stamp” your visitors’ passports.  The hall has 43 six foot tables so, depending on how many kids sign up, we may have to share tables.  If you require extra space let me know early enough so I can reserve a whole table for you.   A trifold storyboard (available at Staples, Michael’s and many other office/school supply stores) is a very good way to display vertically.
Your passport is also included in your registration fee.  I will hand those out when you arrive at the fair.
**I will also be collecting one trivia question with its answer from each of the kids who would like to participate in the “International Fair Scavenger Hunt”.  I will need these at least a week or 2 before the fair so I can create the scavenger hunts.  At the fair I will hand out copies of the scavenger hunt to anyone who wants to participate.  Towards the end of the fair, say by 12:30, you need to hand them in to me so that I may use them to do a drawing of prizes for a few lucky kids at the close of the fair.
