More information from the Director regarding the Florence Griswold Museum classes

Here is more information from the director regarding the Florence Griswold Museum classes being offered this school year.  There has been some confusion with those trying to enroll in the classes for this fall.

If the parents are staying and participating, we’d like them to pay as well ($5/adult and $5/child)

If the parents are going to drop children off, that’s okay, but we’d like an cell phone number in case of emergency.

They would like people to pay in advance to hold the spots (there is a maximum of 25 per class).
You can enroll in any number of classes you would like.

They can mail out or send a list of the programs.  A more detailed description of each session will be available at the session prior.

Please call the Griswold Museum to enroll or ask more questions. (860) 434-5542, ext. 111

Again, here is the list of classes being offered.

GIRLS SOCCER YOUTH CAMP

Passing this along from Christian Alarie:

GIRLS SOCCER YOUTH CAMP
(5-10 YEAR OLDS)

Hi, my name is Christian Alarie, and I have two homeshooled daughters.  I would like to volunteer my services to coach homeschooled girls  5 - 10 years old to learn the sport of soccer. The details are still being finalized, but here is where we are at now:
  • The dates for camp are every Friday from July 23rd to August 27th (6 weeks)
  • We will play at the Squadron Line Elementary School, 44 Squadron Line Rd. Simsbury, CT from 1-2 pm
  • I am trying to limit the amount of girls to no more than 24 (we may only get 10, or less which is also great)
  • I am trying to line up assistance from girls from a ~13 year old traveling soccer team to assist me (They play well- and I am working on how many volunteers/mentors we can get to help)
  • This is a free camp, the only potential payment is that that parents may need to buy a shirt of a certain color for their child for the game times (discussed below)
  • I have a special education degree and would be open to children with special needs playing (Please contact me to discuss 1st-so we can make the proper accommodations)
  • Refreshments should be brought by the parents
  • Very hot days will be spent between low key drills and sitting in the shade discussing soccer (there is at least one large tree that we can all sit under comfortably)
  • Rain days are at the discretion of the parents- Soccer will be played rain or shine (bring a change of clothes if felt necessary)
  • The children must come with two attitudes 1) to have fun and 2) want to learn to play (no matter what we learn its more than we knew before, and making friends is even better than sports)
  • The children will be responsible for bringing their own soccer balls (1 per family is fine)
  • I will bring practice cones and only two extra balls
  • We will need to color coordinate shirts for future short game play (we'll discuss that during the first week - it can be difficult to know during game time, who is on your team if everyone is wearing the same color)
  • We will need a basic form filled out with child and parent information and a release form
  • We will be exercising before every practice, and doing short distance running (nothing strenuous). Please just make your children aware of this
  • ALSO- We ask that parents not bring children that are sick (this includes mildly sick), as there may be some children in attendance that have compromised immune systems
  • On another note, there is a playground at the school - however there is no real shade (if the children want to play after soccer please bring extra water- we don't want anyone passing out from dehydration.)
Please let me know of your child's intent to play the sport by July 20th, I would appreciate an early list. Newcomers are welcome but advanced notice is advisable due to the limitations on the number of players.
Thank you,
Christian Alarie

Homeschooler Classes at the Florence Griswold Museum

 Homeschooler Classes
at the Florence Griswold Museum
Thursdays, 1pm-3pm
Special Homeschooler Price:  $5

This was a wonderful art class taught by the Florence Griswold Museum.  They are flexible on the age ranges (kids are painting & looking at exhibits for 2 hours, "school-ready" age).  They are willing to work with us depending on the ages they receive (i.e. break them up into more specific age groups).  The kids usually take a tour of an art exhibit for the first 20-30 min, learning about a style & do an art project the remainder of time.  The staff is very kid-friendly & knowledgable.  Contact the museum if you are interested in being on their mail list.  They are willing to mail out monthly mailers to let you know the upcoming topic/date/time, etc.  Perfect price!!! You can sign up for as many or as few classes as you like.  You can take 1 class and decide then to sign up for more.  The museum grounds are beautiful!!
P.S. to moms-  outlets (Clinton & Westbrook) are 15 min away and there are some great coffee shops in Old Lyme.
