(I’ll need volunteers to help with this)

10:00a.m.-1:00 p.m. -- Grab your passports and visit as many countries as you can! Fair is open to public viewing.

1:00 p.m. -- take down displays, clean up the hall
***please plan to help us tidy up the church hall
Volunteer Needed: 1 person to be treasurer
I will provide beverages, like water and juice, for sale at my cost. Students and their families will need to bring a picnic lunch to amend all the international dishes that are served at the displays.
Participating Students:
Choose a country and over the course of the next few months do research and create a display to present your findings. The displays can include, but are not limited to: maps, pictures, written research, currency and postage, hands on games, a prepared food dish, items originating from your country, costumes, and more. You will also need something representing your country with which to “stamp” your visitors’ passports. The hall has 43 six foot tables so there will be 2 countries per table unless you specify early on that you need a whole table, in which case I will reserve one for you. A trifold storyboard (available at Staples, Michael’s and many other office/school supply stores) is a very good way to display vertically.
Your passport is also included in your registration fee. I will hand those out when you arrive at the fair.
**I will also be collecting one trivia question with its answer from each of the kids who would like to participate in the “International Fair Scavenger Hunt”. I will need these at least a week or 2 before the fair so I can create the scavenger hunts. At the fair I will hand out copies of the scavenger hunt to anyone who wants to participate. Towards the end of the fair, say by 12:30, you need to hand them in to me so that I may use them to do a drawing of prizes for a few lucky kids at the close of the fair.
Complete the registration below and email it to me, Kris McCue , at fvhegroupis@hotmail.com.

Home School Day at The Children’s Museum in West Hartford on Tuesday January 31
Passing this along........
The Fall Home School Days at The Children’s Museum in West Hartford were a huge success. We are ready to start another session this winter starting with Tuesday, January 31, 2012.
We have developed programs that are popular in the classroom AND planetarium. We have created the right mix of physical science, astronomy, and biology programs and attached the schedule for January’s home school day. You can sign up for one, two or three classes. In addition, we have adjusted the times slightly so you have the opportunity to view an exclusive production by National Geographic, Wildest Weather in the Solar System, at 1:00 p.m. You can decide the day of your visit if you would like to stay for this planetarium show in the Science Dome; and there is a small additional charge for each guest. You can find details on the show on our website.
Not only do we have the new planetarium show, but we open a new exhibit mid-January, Dinosaurs Alive – Jurassic Treehouse. The children can walk through dramatic multimedia scenarios featuring animatronic dinosaur families of various species. The children will also get a Pterodactyl’s eye view of these prehistoric families as they make their way through the Jurassic Treehouse overlooking the dinosaurs.
Also, if you missed seeing them in November, Calvin and Hobbes, two of the three foxes who visited us on the weekends in November, became permanent residents of the UTC Wildlife Sanctuary. They are on display and just adorable.
There is a lot new at the Museum so we hope you’ll come to Homeschool Day on Tuesday, January 31. Visit our website http://www.thechildrensmuseumct.org/homeschool_day.php for the prices, details and a link to the online registration form for homeschool day. Pre-registration is required.
We hope to see you again or if this is your first time, we hope to meet you and your family. And as always, please share this information with your home school friends; we would love to have them as well.

Writers' Workshop Lessons will begin in January
Dear Parents:
Writing skills are accomplished in the same way bike riding, soccer skills, learning a song, or memorizing lines in a play are achieved-practice, determination, modeling, and coaching. As parents, we would never put a child on a two wheeler and just say “go for it!” Most certainly we would build confidence with a smaller bike, gradually move to larger bikes that had training wheels and finally holding the backseat of the bike and running along side, we would guide our child to balance and pedal on his/her own. Lots of cheering and encouragement would be necessary along the way.
In a similar fashion, writing skills are most often improved when children have many opportunities to practice, hear other ideas from peers, learn strategies to enhance expression and receive guidance and coaching from an adult. Originally, I was struggling with my own children when I knew they needed to write “more” but couldn’t figure out exactly how to “coach” them without just telling them what to write.
Writing is a life skill. It can be the difference between getting into college, getting the job, getting the refund, or convincingly changing a person’s mind. Writing will carry you forward, demonstrate academic strength and will be a reflection on a student’s education.
I have taught for 16 years and have worked with children in first through eighth grades in writing. I have had extensive training in teaching the strategies that help students become successful writers. For the past year and a half, I have had the pleasure of running Writers’ Workshop classes on Thursdays, in one of the classrooms in the Church of the Living God, in Manchester.
I would love the opportunity to set up class times for small group instruction in the many areas of writing-friendly and business letters, fiction stories, persuasive and expository writing. In the past we have also worked on writing strong paragraphs, main ideas with details, how to organize a 5 paragraph essay, poems, book reports and research.
Before you sign up for art, gymnastics, piano, or sports in the fall, please consider reserving a spot for weekly classes on Thursday afternoons for Writers’ Workshop! Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
