Fellow Chess Enthusiasts:
The Vernon chess club has just completed a very successful first session. We are 7 members strong and looking to add a few more kids.
David Aldi is a fantastic teacher and the kids really enjoy his coaching sessions. There are other homeschool chess clubs in different areas of the state, and we envision tournaments involving all the clubs. It will be a lot of fun and a great learning experience!
The Vernon Chess Club meets at Trinity Lutheran Church from 12:30 to 1:30 on Tuesdays. Our next session will begin on Tuesday, January 15, 2013.The sessions run for 8 weeks at a cost of $80. This fee represents a special homeschool discount being offered by Mr. Aldi.

Any children who have an interest in chess are strongly encouraged to join us!
Please email me at roon48@yahoo.com for any further info or with any questions.
Many thanks,

12th FVHE International Fair

Passing this along from Kris McCue , at fvhegroupis@hotmail.com

Hop on board!
Grab your tickets!
Pack your bags!
Destination unknown...

Join us on an International Adventure!

Farmington Valley Home Educators Group
is proud to announce
the
12th International Fair!
When: Saturday, March 9, 2013
Time: 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Where: Scout Hall Youth Center
28 Abbe Road, East Windsor, Connecticut
their website: http://www.scouthall.com/
Who: All homeschool kids
Cost: $5 per child doing a display
(if you have multiple children working on 1 display the
maximum cost would be $20 to register the kids)
registration fee includes passport and scavenger hunt
$1 each visitor

Events of the day:
8:30-9:30 a.m. set up tables in the hall
(I’ll need volunteers to help with this)
9:30-10:00 a.m. -- arrive and set up displays
10:00a.m.-1:00 p.m. -- Grab your passports and visit as many
countries as you can! Fair is open to public viewing.
12:45 p.m. -- drawing for prizes *details below*
1:00 p.m. -- take down displays, clean up the hall
***please plan to help us tidy up the hall

I will provide beverages, like water and juice, for sale at my cost. Students and their families will need to bring a picnic lunch to amend all the international dishes that are served at the displays.

Participating Students:

Choose a country and over the course of the next few months do research and create a display to present your findings. The displays can include, but are not limited to: maps, pictures, written research, currency and postage, hands on games, a prepared food dish, items originating from your country, costumes, and more. You will also need something representing your country with which to “stamp” your visitors’ passports. The hall has 43 six foot tables so there will be 2 countries per table unless you specify early on that you need a whole table, in which case I will reserve one for you. A tri-fold storyboard (available at Staples, Michael’s and many other office/school supply stores) is a very good way to display vertically.

Your passport is also included in your registration fee. I will hand those out when you arrive at the fair.

**I will also be collecting one trivia question with its answer from each of the kids who would like to participate in the “International Fair Scavenger Hunt”. I will need these at least a week or 2 before the fair so I can create the scavenger hunts. At the fair I will hand out copies of the scavenger hunt to anyone who wants to participate. Towards the end of the fair, say by 12:30, you need to hand them in to me so that I may use them to do a drawing of prizes for a few lucky kids at the close of the fair.

Complete the registration below and email it to me, Kris McCue , at fvhegroupis@hotmail.com.

Tuesday After (home)school Club

Passing this along from Jen Fahey please email her at jen@faheyfam.com if you are interested......

The Tuesday After (home)school Club is meeting this Tuesday, 12/4, at the Scout Hall in East Windsor from 3:30 - 4:30.

We will be offering 2 art projects - string wrapped stars and rice socks. These projects are simple enough for younger ones (with a little help) and challenging enough for older kids because they can be more creative customizing their projects.

The stars can be used as ornaments, decorations or given away as gifts. The rice socks will be made out of white socks kids can decorate using fabric Sharpies and paint. The socks are filled with rice, and can be warmed in the microwave. They are great for muscle pain or just bringing to bed with you on a cold night. I have a 12 year old who especially enjoyed his when he had an earache. These also make great gifts.

I would appreciate a response letting me know how many are participating in the craft so I can make sure there are enough supplies. However, I will have a little extra in case people just so up. A donation of $1 per child to help cover the cost of supplies is requested but not necessary.

To ask any questions or rsvp, please email me at jen@faheyfam.com. Remember, this is a group for all ages.
