Reminder: Used Curriculum Fair and Tag Sale

Passing this along from Kris McCue.....

Save the date!

Bring a Friend or tell a friend!

Come to a Used Curriculum Fair and Tag Sale!

June 15th
9:00AM - 1:00PM
7 Wescott Street, Simsbury
(Shepherd of the Hills Evangelical Lutheran Church)

Sale organized by Farmington Valley Home Educators Group, but sellers are home-school families from all around Connecticut.  Sale will be indoors and outside, weather permitting.

I have 17 vendors bringing all manner of new and used curriculum and educational materials, plus 2 home-schooled teens selling their professional quality art-work, and along with all the amazing deals on curriculum, some families are bringing items to tag sale.   There will be something for everyone, and then some!  Too many goodies to list!

Buyers, cash is preferred particularly for small purchases, but checks are ok if you are buying a quantity from one seller.

There is no admission fee to come shop, but as the church has been so generous to the home-school community over the years I am asking attendees to make a good-will donation of a dollar.   Shepherd of the Hills is due for some major repairs on damaged parts of the building this year and I would like to give them a thank you gift of some cash to put toward this on behalf of the home-school community.   With the exception of $20 for an ad in the Yankee Flyer, all the money the vendors paid to register is going toward this gift to the church.   I will leave a donation basket on a small table near the entrance to the sale, please put a little something in on your way by.

I look forward to seeing you on June 15!

The intent of this ceremony is to recognize the accomplishments of the graduate, as well as allow him/ her to express gratitude to all those who have invested in their life up to that point. It can also be a wonderful testimony to the excellence of homeschooling and provide encouragement to those just beginning their homeschool journey.

Here's what one mom had to say...

"We attended our first TEACH Convention intending just to try homeschooling for kindergarten. As we left the graduation, we decided -- 'We're homeschooling!'... this year our oldest is attending that same graduation, as a graduate."    S.T.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Next boys' 10-14 yr (+/-) hang-out times

Passing this along from Shelley Wurst....

We had a great turn-out for our boys' 10-14 yr hang-out date at Sunrise Park in Suffield last week (what a great location, thanks for arranging it for us, Dorota!). By popular demand from all the Simsbury-area folks, our next date will be out that way, too (but then we'll swing back over this way so those of us local to Stafford/Somers/Ellington are not always the ones driving).

Our next boys' 10-14 yr hang-out date will be on Thursday, June 6, from 1-3 pm at Salmon Brook Park, 215 Salmon Brook St, Granby, CT. Salmon Brook park features a wading brook; kids can fish a little farther down the brook near the bridge, ball fields, and playgrounds. Boys ages 10-14 (ish)and their any-sex any-age siblings are welcome to come hang out and bring whatever they'd like to do with other boys their age. Parents will visit casually while the boys participate in whatever activity happens to appeal to them. This is VERY casual, you do not need to RSVP, just be sure to introduce yourself if you don't already know someone in the group. It's honestly not even necessary to have boys, just come hang out if you want to.

The following date will be on Thursday, June 20, from 1-3pm at Valley Falls in Vernon (I will post the address ahead of time, I believe it's on Valley Falls Rd). Valley Falls has a swimming/fishing pond, mountain bike and hiking trails, an open field, and a little beach area. I will confirm ahead of time whether or not there is an admission or parking fee. This will be the last of our "official" meet-ups for the year. HOWEVER:

For the summer a couple of us are working on coming up with a schedule of where we MIGHT be each Thursday afternoon throughout the summer (same time frame, 1-3pm) -- these will be locations with swimming or water play availability (and likely fishing opportunities as well), and will be scattered throughout the state for variety and to make sure everyone has a chance to do something local. I will post our schedule weekly throughout the summer so that families with boys ages 10-14 (ish) will know where they might find other boys in that age range on Thursdays throughout the summer.

We are also planning a beach date (CT Shore)in early September to kick off the new school year, so look for details about that towards the middle of August.  We will be discussing needs/desires/plans for the fall while soaking up the sun and surf. Some possibilities include organized outings (in addition to our hang-out dates), "club" formations for special interests (fishing club, video game club, etc for example), and alternating days/parts of the state for our hang-outs (like Simsbury area on Tuesday and Stafford/Somers area on Thursdays, or rotating throughout the state each month, etc). EVERYTHING is optional and open to suggestion and nothing is set in stone until we schedule it (as is proven by our Granby location for this next meeting, LOL).

Any questions?? Feel free to contact me at collieherd@cox.net
Hope to see you all at Salmon Brook in 2 weeks!
